These frames come from a winter journey north, taken along the way rather than at a single destination.
A small lighthouse on a snow-covered cape, facing the open sea. Two figures at the edge of the ice as the clouds turn gold. Light breaking through heavy clouds onto the water.
In Otaru, the old stone warehouses are mirrored in the canal. Completed in 1923, the canal was built by reclaiming land from the sea rather than digging inland, so it bends gently instead of running straight. Boats once unloaded cargo straight into the warehouses here.
In Biei, near Furano, a single spruce stands alone on a white hill. Its crown is shaped like a star, so locals call it the Christmas Tree.
Hokkaido in winter is quiet, cold and very clear. Most of these moments lasted only a few seconds.
