At 2,060m on the Happo-one ridge in Hakuba, Happo Pond is often called the observation deck of the Northern Alps. A gondola and two chairlifts lift you to 1,830m, and from there a rocky trail climbs another 230m along the open ridge.
On a still day the pond becomes a mirror for the mountains. Through the waist-level finder, the same scene appears again, small and quiet, framed in a square of glass.
That day the clouds kept moving over the peaks, paragliders drifted across the sky, and the slopes below were just beginning to turn gold.
